What is a Variance?
A variance is relief from the standards of the Zoning Ordnance as determined by the Zoning Officer. Variances are granted by the Zoning Hearing Board from a particular regulation contained in the Zoning Ordinance. Specifically, a variance allows a property owner to seek relief from a standard of the zoning ordinance to enable the property owner to use his or her land that would otherwise not be possible because of location, topography, size or shape under the strict standards of the ordinance. The Zoning Hearing Board has exclusive authority to grant a variance, based on 5 specific criteria.

How is trash collected in the Township?
All trash pick up is by privately owned companies arranged by each resident. Trash companies that serve Mt Joy:

Can I pay my taxes at the Township building?
No, mail payment or in person at 3425 Baltimore Pike, Littlestown, PA 17340
Who do I call about a dead animal on the road?
If it is a township road, you will call the game commission at 814-643-1831 and if it is a state road you will have to call Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) at 717-243-5414.
Do you recycle in the township?
No, however we do have an annual recycling drive at the Township building, usually in the spring. Keep an eye out on our website for more information.
How often do I need to get my septic tank pumped?
Pumping and inspection is required every four years. If you have not pumped in that time, you will receive a notice to pump in January. More information
Is there a requirement for who can pump my septic tank?
Yes, you must use approved companies. A list can be found here.
